I'm a writer, not a photographer, but I do think with any creative thing our brains instinctively know when they need the world to be mulch, for it all to go into the heap to come out as something later. I think it's easy to think this is laziness or disorganisation, and maybe sometimes it is, but sometimes I think it's more that the creative brain is playing the long game and all those things we see/hear/think will become output of some kind, but not necessarily when we think they should or in the form we expect.
I like this idea… I definitely agree that my brain/body knows when I need a break, and it most likely knows when I just need to experience something and not be thinking about how I can document it. I am notorious for burning myself out so it makes sense!
This was beautifully written, thanks! I agree - I’ve always loved photography that uses film. Photography has always eluded me skill-wise, so I avoid it and look at other people’s. There’s a nostalgia and warmth to these photos - look forward to seeing more of your work!
If you ever do really get the urge to delve into it without worrying about skill, I’d recommend getting a cheap little 35mm point and shoot camera. There’s absolutely nothing to them, just press the button, so all you have to think about is your subject and framing. They’re very capable of taking some great photos!
Cheers, will definitely consider it, as I generally love photography as a medium anyway - I did see you had recommended one in another comment, so will check it out!
The area of Scotland you are in looks beautiful btw!
I really enjoyed reading this and liked the way you changed your mindset. I'm not a photographer but love photos on film, I'm always thinking about getting one and just need to get round to it. Love your photos!
Thank you! I’m quite bad for dwelling on things I wish I’d done, it’s something I’m trying to work on. No point in stressing about things I can’t change!
As well as my big camera I have a very simple little point and shoot canon 35mm camera which would be great for someone who wants to just play around with film photography, you could easily pick one up just to try 🙂
I’ve never really thought of it that way but you’re right, there are seasons of capturing what feels like everything and seasons were nothing this documented on film. You have such a beautiful way with words.
As I am new here, do you announce when you’re going to add things like bookmarks to your shop or do you just continually add them? I’m keeping my eye out…
Absolutely! I find it really interesting that one of the most exciting and adventurous times of my life is one where I took a break from documenting on film… funny how things work it.
I’ve just recently started doing shop updates again after just adding things spontaneously for the past few years! I’m trying to be a bit more organised. My next woven shop update is the 23rd of March, and then I’ll be working on a carved one for about mid April, date to be chosen soon 🙂
Thank you so much for this post 🙏 Photography has always been part of my life, and although I’ve fallen out of love with it recently, I hope that the arrival of spring will inspire me to pick up the camera again.
I’ve always thought photography is something you either have in you, or you haven’t. And if it’s in you, it always will be even if you have a break! It’s just a recharge 👌🏻

No, no point but easier said than done, I do the same with many things!
Thank you for the tip also, that’s really helpful as I never know where to start with cameras which has put me off of trying to buy one too!
